First-winter Glaucous Gull, photographed at Frankley Reservoir. Similar in size to largest argentatus or female GBB (compare size and bulk with Herring Gulls to right). General characters typical hyperboreus: heavy-looking body; rather angular head; long, robust bill with fleshy-pink basal 70% & with a neatly defined blackish tip. First-winter has dark eye and more pointed primaries than older individuals. Extension of the primary tips beyond the tip of the tail is about equal to or somewhat shorter than bill-length.
