Mediterranean Gull Larus melanocephalusAdult, July 2015, West Midlands |

An adult Mediterranean Gull in transition from summer plumage.
This
individual was ringed on the breeding grounds in NE Poland in May 2013 and
has appeared
in the West Midlands in late summer
(generally late July/early August) in several consecutive years, with scattered
observations later in the autumn or winter.
However, since ringing it has not returned to Poland but has been observed in
winter, spring and summer at the reserve at
Thumeries des Cinq
Tailles, in Pas-de-Calais in northern France (per BTO and Polish Ringing Scheme), where it is now presumably breeding.
Thus, its movements from there to Olton now involve a more modest 400km rather
than the original 1500km from its ringing site in Poland.
