Great Black-backed Gull Larus marinusSecond-winter, Staffordshire, February 2004 |

Note intricate, variegated pattern of tertials and coverts. This individual is a typical second-winter, with indications of a blackish mantle developing, pale 'half-moons' on the relatively rounded tips to the primaries, and the rather plain outer greater coverts. Birds of this age are sometimes more similar in plumage to first-winter. Click here for an example.
