Great Black-backed Gull Larus marinusSecond-winter, January 2004 |
© A. R. Dean
Note intricate, variegated pattern of scapulars and coverts. This individual has a plumage basically similar to first-winter, but the extensively pale bill, the second-generation primaries, with relatively rounded tips and pale 'half-moons', and the rather plain greater coverts indicate that it is second-winter. Birds of this age often, but not always show, some black feathering emerging on the mantle. Click here for an example.
