Lesser Black-backed Gull Larus fuscusAdult, presumed intermedius, West Midlands, August 2010 |
© A. R. Dean
An adult LBB with characters indicative of intermedius. Note relatively black
hue of upperparts and limited contrast between wing-point and
upperparts compared with adjacent
graellsii. See similar individual photographed at the same site in
September 2009.
The identification of intermedius is complicated by a degree of clinal
variation among LBBG populations and the existence in The Netherlands of
intermediate birds attributed to mixing of graellsii from the UK with
intermedius from farther north. The validity of intermedius as a
subspecies is sometimes questioned.
