A fourth-calendar-year Herring Gull, moulting from 3rd summer to 4th winter (adult) plumage. Note the brown sullying remaining on the tertials and the outer tail-feathers. The central tail-feathers have been dropped, as have the central primaries.
When the moult is completed the plumage will be that of an adult. The bill is already of adult colouration, lacking any residual black markings.
