Herring Gull Larus argentatus

Third calendar-year (2S > 3W) August 2010

Herring Gull 3S >3W, August 2010

A. R. Dean

A third-calendar-year Herring Gull moulting from 2S to 3W. Note the new plain grey inner tertials but retained outer tertial with black internal marking. Primaries six and seven also replaced with adult-like feathers.
Bill retains clear signs of immaturity while iris still quite dark (darker in fact that many 3cy individuals).
