Variation in timing of acquisition of white-head

The date by which Herring Gulls lose their winter head-streaking can vary quite markedly. The two gulls in the above image are a presumed pair, as they were long-term companions frequenting a particular site for several months during the winter of 2014/2015 and subsequent winters. By late January, one individual had acquired a very white head yet the other still retained copious head streaking.
