Lesser Black-backed Gull Larus fuscusSecond calendar-year graellsii, West Midlands, November 2004 |
© A. R. Dean
This second-winter Lesser Black-backed Gull is more similar to first-winter than many but note the new inner scapulars and tertials, showing neat anchor marks subterminally, and the more variegated pattern of the greater coverts. The bases of the tertials nevertheless remain solidly dark and the pale fringes do not reach the base of the feathers (thus differing from Herring Gull). The age of this individual is also confirmed by the pale iris.
