Lesser Black-backed Gull Larus fuscus

Adult graellsii, West Midlands, April 2019

Lesser Black-backed Gull, adult graellsii

Adult graellsii wing-pattern. Note reasonably clear contrast between black subterminal marks on outer primaries and the dark grey bases.
This characterises graellsii c.f. intermedius, where the contrast is generally much reduced. However, both races are variable;
there are intermediate-looking individuals in the Netherlands and Belgium and the validity of intermedius is sometimes questioned.
