Note solidly dark bases to tertials, with neat pale margins confined to tips. This provides a good distinction from first-year Herring Gull, where the pale edges to the tertials extend along the entire outer edge and meet the greater coverts (usually but not invariably there are also 'internal' pale areas to the tertials in HG).
